Binary
Each position is a power of two. The rightmost bit is 2⁰, then 2¹, 2² and so on. A 1 includes that weight; a 0 does not.
Hexadecimal
One hex digit maps to exactly four binary bits. That is why developers often group binary into nibbles: F₁₆ = 1111₂.
Signed two’s complement
With a fixed word size, the top bit is the sign bit. If it is set, subtract 2^bits from the unsigned pattern to get the signed value.
Text bytes
Text is encoded as bytes. This lab uses UTF-8, then displays each byte in binary, hex and decimal. Non-ASCII characters can use more than one byte.
