How this 2048 game works

2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a square grid. Every move shifts every tile as far as it can travel in one direction. When two tiles with the same value meet, they merge into one tile worth their sum. A valid move then adds a new 2, or occasionally a 4, to an empty cell. The basic rule is short, but the board becomes difficult because every move also changes the space available for future merges.

The default Classic board is 4×4 and uses 2048 as its milestone. Practice also includes a compact 3×3 Challenge with a 512 target and a roomier 5×5 Relaxed board with a 4096 target. These are intentionally different board-size modes inside one engine, not separate search pages. You can keep playing after reaching the target; a run ends only when no legal slide or merge remains.

Controls built for real play

On desktop, use the Arrow keys or WASD. On a phone or tablet, swipe directly across the board. Direction buttons are also available below the grid, so a player who does not want to swipe can still use a large touch target. An invalid direction does not create a tile or consume a move. Only a move that actually changes the board advances the deterministic spawn sequence.

The game saves the current seeded run locally in this browser. Reopening the same Practice URL can restore the board, score, move count and up to five Undo snapshots. Undo is deliberately available as a learning tool, but it marks the current run assisted. Restarting the same seed does the same. Assisted runs stay playable and save normally, but they cannot replace a clean personal best.

What a clean personal best means

The original game score remains the primary result. For two clean runs on the same board size, the site compares score first, then highest tile, then fewer moves. A 3×3 result is never mixed with a 4×4 or 5×5 result because the available space changes the puzzle substantially. All of these records are local browser statistics; the page does not claim a global ranking or population percentile.

Score is useful, but it is not the only signal worth watching. Highest tile tells you how far the merge ladder progressed, moves provide efficiency context, and the empty-cell count in the live status line is an immediate warning about board pressure. Strong play usually comes from protecting space and preserving a predictable order of large tiles rather than merging every possible pair as soon as it appears.

A practical strategy for beginners

A reliable starting habit is to keep the largest tile near a corner and avoid moves that repeatedly pull it away. Build nearby powers of two in a rough sequence so smaller values have a route toward the larger ones. If a move scores points but scatters the board into incompatible values, it may be worse than a quieter move that creates an empty cell and keeps the merge chain organized.

Try to think one spawn ahead. You do not control whether the next tile is 2 or 4, but you can control how many empty cells remain and whether either new value has somewhere useful to go. The board becomes dangerous when every row and column is blocked by alternating values that cannot combine. Empty cells are therefore not wasted space; they are the flexibility that lets later moves work.

Why this is separate from Today’s 6

2048 is a specialist Practice game. Adding it to the catalog does not rewrite the historical Today’s 6 rotation or its score contract. You can play as many seeded Practice runs as you want without changing today’s six-game Daily Score. The separate Daily 2048 mode also keeps its own local specialist history and streak.

This separation matters because a long open-ended sliding puzzle should not be forced into the same scoring model as a quick six-game daily set. The platform can offer both: a stable short daily routine and deeper specialist games with their own natural metrics.
