Daily Kakuro
One verified unique-solution number crossword for the date, with the same board for repeated visits on that local date and a separate browser-local specialist streak.
A Daily puzzle should be stable, not merely random
Daily Kakuro maps the local calendar date through the platform’s deterministic seed function. That seed chooses the day’s difficulty, one of the committed source puzzles and one of eight symmetry transforms. Visiting again on the same date therefore returns to the same puzzle identity rather than quietly dealing a new board after a refresh.
The puzzle identity is also part of the autosave key. Entered digits, pencil notes, elapsed time, Hint count and checked-mistake state resume locally when the same Daily is reopened. Solving the puzzle records the date once in Kakuro’s own Daily history. Reopening a solved date does not artificially advance the streak again.
Daily Kakuro does not alter Today’s 6
This distinction is deliberate. The platform has a separate frozen Today’s 6 rotation built from the established core slot system. Kakuro joins the broader Practice catalog as a specialist, but its Daily mode is not inserted into that six-game schedule. Adding a high-value specialist therefore expands optional replay without destabilizing the existing 2026 Today’s 6 contract.
That also means Kakuro’s local specialist streak should not be confused with the main Daily streak. The two systems answer different questions: the platform streak measures the established Today’s 6 behavior, while the Kakuro streak records consecutive local dates on which this optional number crossword was solved.
Every Daily comes from the same verified bank
Daily mode does not relax the quality gate. The 54 committed sources are built and then independently checked by a solution-counting solver. Each source is accepted only if the solver finds exactly one solution. Easy has 20 sources, Standard has 20 and Hard has 14. The eight legal symmetry transforms are deterministic graph-preserving changes, so the full runtime set provides 432 reproducible source-and-transform combinations.
The clue sums displayed in the browser are recalculated from the transformed solution and transformed white-cell mask. They are not pre-rendered artwork. Each white cell belongs to exactly one Across and one Down run, every accepted run has at least two cells, and no legal solution may repeat a digit within a run.
How to solve the Daily efficiently
Start with the most restrictive clue sums. Two cells totaling 3 must be 1 and 2; two totaling 17 must be 8 and 9. Similar extreme totals quickly constrain a run. Then use crossings. If an Across clue permits a small set of digits and the selected cell’s Down clue permits another set, the overlap can reduce that cell to only one or two candidates.
The selected-runs panel shows the current Across and Down totals, remaining amounts and legal unordered digit sets. This is useful for learning common Kakuro combinations without placing the answer for you. Auto Notes goes one step further by intersecting both current run constraints for every empty cell. Neither feature reveals the frozen solution, so both remain compatible with a clean local solve.
Live conflicts operate from the rules too. A duplicated digit in the same run, or a set of entered values that leaves no legal way to complete a run to its target, is highlighted immediately when that option is enabled. This can catch arithmetic dead ends before a whole board is filled.
Check and Hint have a stricter meaning
Check explicitly compares entered digits with the certified solution. If it finds a wrong entry, the run is marked assisted for clean-best purposes. Hint fills one selected answer from the solution and also marks the solve assisted. This keeps the distinction visible between tools that explain constraints and tools that use privileged answer information.
Undo, Redo, manual Notes and Auto Notes do not by themselves break a clean solve. The point is to support deliberate reasoning, not to punish ordinary puzzle-interface conveniences. A clean personal best is simply a solve with zero Hints and zero checked mistakes.
Local history without a login
Daily completion, the Kakuro streak and best streak are stored only in this browser’s local state. No account is needed and the page does not claim a world rank, percentile or global leaderboard. Clearing storage removes those local records because there is no remote profile pretending otherwise.
This local-first design also keeps the Daily available without a server-generated puzzle request. The bank, solver-verified source metadata and game engine are static assets. The service worker can cache the app shell for a resilient installed-web-app experience, while the date mapping happens in the browser.
Why mix a Daily puzzle with unlimited Practice?
A single Daily creates a repeatable checkpoint. Unlimited Practice creates volume. If today’s board exposes a weak spot—perhaps you repeatedly overlook remaining sums or fail to eliminate a digit already used in a run—you can switch to Easy, Standard or Hard Practice and work on the same mechanic without waiting for tomorrow.
Practice uses seeded Fresh boards and tracks clean local bests by difficulty. The Daily uses a date-stable identity and its own history. They share the same real Kakuro engine, so the controls and reasoning transfer directly between the two modes rather than sending the user to a simplified landing-page imitation.
A number game, not a diagnostic claim
Kakuro can exercise addition fluency, candidate elimination and constraint reasoning, but the Daily score remains only a game score. Faster is not automatically smarter, and a browser-local result is not a population percentile, IQ estimate or academic assessment. The product reports the things it actually knows: completion, time, assistance state, puzzle difficulty and local streak history.
If you want one repeatable challenge, use the Daily. If you want sustained practice, open the full Kakuro page and choose a difficulty. Both routes stay free of fake multiplayer, fake leaderboards and unverified “solvable” claims.
