FREECELL · CLASSIC NUMBERED DEALS

FreeCell online, built as a strategy puzzle.

Every card is visible from the opening deal. That changes the character of solitaire completely: there is no hidden stock and almost no luck to blame. You can inspect all eight columns, decide which low cards must be exposed first, preserve your four free cells as temporary workspace, and use empty columns to move longer alternating-color sequences. This page launches the full FreeCell specialist rather than a simplified duplicate.

What makes FreeCell different from most solitaire games?

FreeCell starts with a standard 52-card deck spread face up across eight tableau columns. The first four columns contain seven cards and the final four contain six. Four empty free cells sit above the tableau and can each hold one card. Four suit foundations begin empty and build from Ace through King. Because every card is visible at the start, the main challenge is planning rather than discovering hidden information.

The tableau builds downward in alternating colors. A red 7 can sit on a black 8, for example, and a black 6 can then sit on that red 7. A single exposed card can be moved into an empty free cell, and any exposed card can move to its suit foundation when it is the next rank needed. Empty tableau columns are especially valuable because they provide much more temporary movement capacity than a single free cell.

Why numbered deals matter

The specialist reproduces the classic Microsoft FreeCell deal algorithm instead of inventing a different shuffle behind familiar deal numbers. That means a numbered opening is reproducible: entering the same deal number returns the same 52-card arrangement. Deal #1 is therefore a stable puzzle that can be replayed, compared or shared, and the same is true throughout the original 1–32,000 range.

The historically famous exception is deal #11982. It is known as the unsolvable deal from the original Microsoft 32,000. The game lets you load it deliberately because it is part of FreeCell history, but the interface labels it clearly rather than pretending every numbered deal can be won. Random-solvable and Daily selection deliberately skip that number.

Supermoves are not unlimited dragging

A visually ordered run does not automatically mean the whole run can move. FreeCell’s key resource is temporary space. The maximum run length depends on how many free cells and empty columns are available. The game calculates that capacity before every multi-card tableau move and rejects sequences that would require more temporary space than the current board provides.

This matters because an empty column effectively multiplies your mobility. Filling the last empty column for a small tactical gain can sharply reduce what you can move next. The Strategy Coach therefore reports your current move capacity and calls attention to low workspace, empty-column leverage and buried low cards without revealing a full solution.

Tap, drag or use focused controls

On a phone, tap an exposed card or a valid alternating-color run and then tap its destination. You can also drag from the selected card toward another column, a free cell or a foundation. On desktop, double-clicking an exposed foundation-ready card sends it home when the move is legal. Every card remains a real focusable control, so keyboard and accessibility navigation are not replaced with an unlabelled canvas.

Undo, Hint and Safe Home are available because they are useful learning tools. Hint describes one legal idea rather than secretly rearranging the board. Safe Home moves only cards the engine classifies as safe foundation progress. These assists intentionally mark the run Assisted so a heavily helped solve cannot replace a Clean personal best. Restart is also treated as Assisted for the same reason.

What does Clean mean?

Clean is a local fairness boundary, not a skill rating. A Clean win means the deal was cleared without the specialist’s Hint, Safe Home, Undo or restart assistance. The browser can then compare that completion with your previous clean time and move count. Assisted wins still count as wins and remain useful practice; they simply do not overwrite the cleaner record.

No global rating, Elo, percentile or online leaderboard is implied. The game stores its statistics and unfinished deals in this browser. That keeps the product usable without an account, backend or paid API and makes it clear which progress is genuinely available.

A practical first-game strategy

Start by scanning for Aces and Twos, but do not automatically fill all four free cells just because they are available. Free cells are temporary parking, and each occupied cell reduces the size of the run you can transport. Building a descending alternating-color run in the tableau is often better than parking several unrelated cards.

Next, notice whether any move creates an empty column. An empty column can accept any exposed card or legal run and greatly increases supermove capacity. That makes it a strategic resource rather than a blank space to fill immediately. If moving a King into the first empty column does not expose anything useful, keeping the column open may be stronger.

Finally, send foundation cards home thoughtfully. Aces and Twos are generally harmless foundation progress, while higher ranks can sometimes be useful as tableau landing cards. The Safe Home control exists specifically to demonstrate the distinction between a foundation move that is merely legal and one that is conservatively safe to automate.

Unlimited replay without changing Today’s 6

FreeCell is a Practice specialist. Playing one deal, ten deals or a numbered historical challenge does not change the platform’s six-game Daily Score. The separate Daily FreeCell challenge has its own local history and streak. This preserves the established Today’s 6 rotation while still giving FreeCell the replay depth expected from a serious standalone puzzle.
