Japanese Vocabulary Quiz

Build practical beginner vocabulary through three retrieval directions instead of repeating one multiple-choice format. The game includes 300 curated words across 15 everyday themes, then turns actual misses into a local review queue. It is intentionally described as beginner vocabulary rather than an official JLPT list, because the JLPT does not publish a definitive vocabulary syllabus.

Three ways to retrieve a word

Recognition is useful, but one direction is not enough.

Meaning 10 starts from a Japanese word and asks for the English meaning. Reading 10 shows a kanji-containing word and asks you to type its kana reading or common romaji. Reverse 10 starts from English and asks you to retrieve the Japanese word from same-theme choices. The Daily challenge mixes all three directions in one date-stable set.

A first miss is recorded before one clean retry, so the result screen measures first-attempt performance rather than quietly converting a corrected answer into a perfect score. That same miss becomes useful later: it enters Weak Review and is due again immediately.

What the 300-word bank covers

The launch bank favors everyday beginner vocabulary that can support later reading and listening practice.

Fifteen equal themes keep the bank inspectable instead of hiding a random pile of words behind a large number. They cover basics, time, people, family, home, school and work, food and drink, places, travel, body and health, nature and weather, two common-verb groups, descriptions, and everyday life. Each theme contains exactly 20 words.

The game exposes the written form, reading and a compact English meaning. The searchable Word Bank lets you browse those fields without changing any score or review history. That separation matters: opening a reference should not count as practice or pretend a word was recalled.

Weak Words and scheduled review

Review is based on what happened in this browser, not on an invented AI mastery score.

When a word is missed, its local stage returns to Learning and it is added to Weak Words. Correct first attempts move through visible review intervals of 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. A word leaves the weak queue after three correct review attempts, while its scheduled interval can continue independently.

The labels describe a saved review schedule only. They are not a memory probability, population percentile, classroom grade or JLPT score. If browser storage is cleared, the local history disappears because there is no login, database or cloud profile in this public build.

Daily Words and Sprint

Use the specialist Daily for habit, then Sprint when you want speed.

Daily Japanese Words creates 12 prompts for the date: four meaning, four reading and four reverse. The sequence is deterministic, so two fresh browsers on the same date receive the same items. Its streak is separate from Today’s 6 and from the existing Daily Kana streak.

Sprint lasts 60 seconds and uses fast meaning recognition inside the selected theme. Personal bests compare correct count first, then accuracy and streak, and only compare attempts from the same theme. The timer waits for explicit Start instead of running while you read the instructions.
