Letter Hive Word Game

Build words from seven letters while always using the center. Familiar Main words drive mastery; lower-frequency accepted vocabulary remains Bonus so obscure words never block the normal goal.

How the seven-letter hive works

Each Letter Hive puzzle has exactly seven different letters and one required center. Every accepted word must contain the center, use only letters visible in the hive, and contain at least four letters. Letters can repeat inside an answer. That creates a compact search problem: you are not guessing from the entire dictionary, but you still need to notice prefixes, suffixes, repeated-letter patterns and longer words that use most or all of the set.

Main words keep the normal goal fair

Letter Hive deliberately separates familiar Main vocabulary from lower-frequency Bonus vocabulary. Main words come from the stricter high-frequency portion of the project’s frozen English corpus and are the only words used for mastery progress. Lower-frequency entries can still be accepted when they pass the same lexical and family-suitability checks, but they remain Bonus finds. A player never has to discover a rare Bonus word to reach Hive Mastery or Perfect Hive.

Where the vocabulary comes from

The game does not query a remote dictionary while you play. Its source vocabulary comes from the established Word Grid pipeline, which combines a game-oriented word list, a frequency-ranked English source and a frozen en_US Hunspell/SCOWL dictionary gate. V0.82 then applies a stricter exact-token suitability filter because an exhaustive answer game can surface far more words than an ordinary board search. The runtime bank is produced offline and stays fixed for the release.

A 512-puzzle frozen bank

The committed V0.82 bank contains 512 deterministic hives. Every stored puzzle has seven unique letters, one center letter, at least one Main pangram, at least three longer Main words and a bounded answer count. Main answers range from 20 to 54 with a median of 29. Bonus answers range from 5 to 35. The result is enough variety for Daily and Unlimited Practice without creating an enormous unreviewed procedural dictionary surface.

Independent exact-answer verification

The same builder that chooses puzzles is not trusted as its own final proof. A separate Project-only verifier reads the frozen Word Grid source again, rebuilds the strict V0.82 accepted vocabulary and exact-solves every Main and Bonus answer from the seven-letter subset plus center constraint. It also recomputes pangrams and maximum score. Release work requires all 512 committed puzzles to equal that independently recomputed result.

Pangrams reward complete letter coverage

A Main pangram uses all seven hive letters at least once. Every frozen puzzle contains at least one, and the V0.82 bank contains between one and three per hive. Pangrams matter because they encourage more deliberate pattern search than simply trying short fragments. The application marks them visibly and adds a transparent seven-point bonus to the ordinary word score.

Transparent scoring and mastery

Four-letter Main words score one point. Main words of five letters or more score their letter length. Pangrams add seven points. Bonus words are accepted but contribute no mastery score. Because the complete verified Main set is finite, the application knows the real maximum score. Hive Mastery begins at 70 percent of that maximum, while Perfect Hive means every Main answer has been found. Bonus words are optional even for a perfect result.

Hints do not pretend to be clean play

Hint reveals the length and first letter of one remaining Main answer. That information changes the run to Assisted. Reveal Answers goes further and ends the active run while showing the complete Main and Bonus lists. Shuffle is different: it only rearranges the visible six outer letters and keeps the center fixed, so it gives no hidden answer information and does not mark the run Assisted.

Keyboard, touch and mobile layout

Each letter is a real button. On touch screens you tap the hive cells, and on desktop you can type any displayed letter. Backspace removes the latest character, Enter submits, Space shuffles and Escape clears the current entry. The mobile layout keeps all seven cells in a compact 300-pixel hive on a 390-pixel viewport and is designed to avoid horizontal scrolling.

Autosave and local statistics

Unfinished progress is stored locally with the exact puzzle ID and deterministic seed. A refresh can restore found Main words, Bonus words, the outer-letter arrangement and the Clean or Assisted state. Specialist statistics also stay in the browser: played hives, mastery, perfect hives, clean mastery, best score, best word count and Daily streak. There is no account, worldwide percentile or fabricated leaderboard.

Daily Letter Hive is separate from Today’s 6

The specialist Daily maps a calendar date to a deterministic hive in the same frozen bank. Completing it updates only Letter Hive history and streak. It does not add a seventh slot to Today’s 6, does not modify the frozen Today’s 6 lineup, and does not alter the main Daily Score. This keeps optional specialist habits from destabilizing the platform’s original daily contract.

Why this design is useful for learning

The hive forces repeated retrieval around a constrained letter set instead of pure recognition. Familiar words create achievable progress, pangrams encourage deeper pattern search, and Bonus finds expose additional vocabulary without making obscure entries mandatory. Replaying a deterministic hive after a hint can turn a one-off answer into a remembered pattern, while the separate Daily gives the skill loop a simple recurring habit.
