What is a Make 24 puzzle?
A Make 24 puzzle gives you four starting numbers and one target: exactly 24. You must use every starting number once. The available operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Parentheses are not entered directly in this trainer because the interface makes them unnecessary: you combine two cards at a time, and the result becomes a new card. Three merges consume all four starting numbers and define the same grouping that parentheses would define in a written expression.
The simplicity of the rule hides a useful mental-arithmetic challenge. A strong solver does not only calculate quickly. You learn to work backward from factors of 24, recognize useful differences such as 6−2 or 9−5, notice when a product can be repaired by a remaining number, and become comfortable with division creating a temporary fraction. The result is a compact exercise in arithmetic fluency, order of operations, flexible number sense and planning.
Why this trainer uses exact rational arithmetic
Many browser calculators use floating-point decimals internally. That is convenient for general computation, but it is the wrong authority for a puzzle whose answer must be exact. This trainer stores every card as a reduced numerator and denominator. If you divide 8 by 3, the card is literally 8/3. If you later multiply it by 9, the next card is exactly 24. There is no hidden tolerance such as “23.999999 is close enough.”
This matters most on harder puzzles. Some sources have a clean integer-only route, while a small group of Challenge sources require a fractional intermediate. Those puzzles teach a different habit: a fraction is not necessarily a mistake or dead end. It can be the bridge that makes the target possible.
Easy, Standard and Challenge are solver-defined
The three levels are not cosmetic labels applied to random numbers. The project-local generator enumerates exact solutions for candidate four-number sets. Easy sources use values from 1 through 9 and have many normalized exact routes. Standard sources have fewer verified routes and can use values through 13. Challenge sources have only one or two normalized routes, or belong to the special set for which every exact route needs a fractional intermediate.
This gives the difficulty selector a concrete meaning. Easy is useful for building pattern recognition and speed. Standard asks for more deliberate search. Challenge makes blind trial-and-error expensive and rewards factor planning, reversibility and fraction comfort.
How to use the combine interface
Select the first card, select an operator, and then select the second card. Order matters for subtraction and division. For addition and multiplication the mathematical result is commutative, but the same interaction sequence is kept for consistency. After the merge, the two selected cards disappear and one result card takes their place. Its small caption preserves the expression that produced it.
Undo and Redo let you explore without restarting. Check independently asks whether the current remaining cards still have a route to 24. A Verified Hint goes one step further: it solves the exact current state and applies one next merge that lies on a valid route. Because Check and Hint reveal information that can materially help the solve, the session becomes Assisted and is kept separate from Clean best records.
What “source routes” means
The monitor shows the number of normalized exact solution expressions found for the original source. This is a property of the frozen source bank, not a promise that every syntactic rearrangement is counted separately. Commutative duplicates are normalized so swapping the written order of the same addition or multiplication is not treated as a fundamentally new insight. The value is used for difficulty selection and gives a rough sense of how constrained the source is.
Practice seeds and repeatable puzzles
Practice is deterministic once the URL contains its seed. Opening a seed again reproduces the same source and the same permutation of its four numbers. If you begin Practice without a seed, the page inserts one into the URL immediately. That makes a useful puzzle shareable and also gives browser-local autosave a stable key.
Fresh puzzle creates a new seed while preserving the current level. Restart keeps the current puzzle but clears your merge history. These are deliberately different actions: Fresh changes the problem; Restart changes only your attempt.
Keyboard and mobile use
On a keyboard, the number keys 1 through 4 select the currently visible card positions. The +, −, *, and / keys choose an operation. Ctrl or Command plus Z undoes, and H requests a Verified Hint. On touch screens the same puzzle works through large card and operator controls, and the responsive two-column card layout avoids body-level horizontal scrolling.
Local records without an account
The trainer stores recent solves, Clean best times, Assisted status, Daily history and autosave state in the same browser-local project store used by the rest of DailyBrainArc. No account is required. The current attempt can restore after a reload, including exact fractional card values and elapsed time. Clearing site storage clears those local records.
Independent solvability verification
The puzzle bank is generated by project code, but the release does not rely on the generator simply claiming its own output is correct. A separate verifier reconstructs the arithmetic search using exact fractions, confirms all 60 frozen sources are solvable, tests seeded Practice at scale and checks every 2026 Daily selection. Generator reproduction is also compared byte-for-byte with the committed bank.
What this page is — and is not
This is a focused entry point for people looking for a browser-based Make 24 arithmetic puzzle and an explanation of the exact rules used by this implementation. It is not a family of thin pages split by every digit range, seed, score, device type or difficulty adjective. Easy, Standard, Challenge and Daily all lead to the same specialist application so the product behavior, verification contract and local progress system stay consistent.
