Periodic Table Quiz — Learn All 118 Elements

Practice element names, symbols, atomic numbers and table positions with typed recall, a full interactive table, three learning ranges and browser-local weak-item review.

Start with a manageable range

The specialist is built around three explicit ranges rather than pretending every learner should begin by memorizing all 118 elements at once. Foundations uses atomic numbers 1 through 20. That range covers the first four rows far enough to establish the rhythm of names and symbols without an overwhelming table. Core extends through xenon at atomic number 54. Full opens the complete 118-element source. The question rules stay the same while the pool expands, so progress comes from broader recall rather than a hidden scoring change.

Name and symbol recall

Symbol → Name shows a chemical symbol such as Fe and asks you to type the element name. Name → Symbol reverses the direction. Typed production is deliberately used instead of a four-choice recognition screen because recognizing a correct answer among distractors is not the same task as producing it from memory. The checker is case-insensitive and accepts common English spelling aliases for aluminium/aluminum and caesium/cesium while the frozen source keeps the IUPAC-style names used by this build.

Atomic numbers without a lookup shortcut

Atomic Number mode shows a number and accepts either the element name or its symbol. During scored questions the periodic table labels are hidden, so the large table is not an answer key sitting directly under the prompt. Once you answer, the correct element is revealed and highlighted for review. This keeps the interactive table useful while preserving the difference between Learn mode and active recall.

Learn the geography of the table

Position mode shows an element name and symbol, then asks you to tap its blank location. Main-table cells are represented by their period and group position. Lanthanides and actinides are displayed as detached rows beneath the main table. V0.119 intentionally does not force those rows into a disputed group-3 answer; the position task asks where they are displayed in this table rather than turning a nomenclature debate into a fake certainty.

Why the data set is deliberately narrow

The specialist focuses on facts that are stable and central to periodic-table literacy: atomic number, element name, chemical symbol, period and displayed table position. It does not turn atomic weights, melting points, room-temperature states or category boundaries into mandatory quiz facts in this release. Some of those values are context-dependent, periodically revised or more interpretive than the identity facts. A smaller frozen contract is easier to verify independently and easier for a learner to understand.

All 118 elements are local

The game does not fetch an element API after load. A project-local CSV contains all 118 atomic numbers, symbols and names, plus the table coordinates used by the interface. A reproducible generator emits the JavaScript data file. An independent verifier checks the atomic-number sequence, unique names, unique symbols, unique display coordinates, period sizes, known anchor elements and generated Practice sessions. This makes the quiz usable without a paid chemistry service or a remote question database.

Weak Review uses actual mistakes

Every answered element can accumulate browser-local asked, correct and missed counts. Weak Review sorts the elements you actually missed on this device and gives them priority. It does not infer a learning disability, memory condition, IQ score or population percentile. If there is no weak history yet, the mode falls back to the full source rather than inventing a weakness profile.

How to practice efficiently

A useful progression is to begin with Foundations in Symbol → Name until the most common symbols feel automatic, then reverse the direction with Name → Symbol. Add Atomic Number after the first two directions are comfortable. Position can come later, because it adds spatial memory on top of identity recall. When Core feels stable, move to Full. Mixed 10 is most useful after several single-direction rounds because it forces you to switch representations without warning.

What the score means

A session result is simply correct answers out of the ten questions in that run, with elapsed time used for local best comparisons when accuracy is tied. It is not a chemistry grade, standardized test score, IQ estimate or diagnostic assessment. The browser-local record is most useful for comparing your own similar sessions and for finding elements that deserve another pass.

Mobile and keyboard use

Typed modes work with the normal keyboard and Enter. On smaller screens the 18-column table stays inside a horizontal scrolling container instead of forcing the whole page wider than the viewport. Position mode uses large button cells inside that table. The rest of the page keeps the same site navigation, skip link and mobile dock used by the other specialist games.
