Task Switching Practice

Read an explicit cue, apply the current response rule, and be ready for that rule to change on the very next trial. DailyBrainArc separates repeat and switch trials, measures accuracy and median response time for each, and reports the difference directly instead of turning it into an opaque brain score.

Start Task Switching

Choose Easy, Standard or Challenge. The cue names the current rule, the stimulus carries two binary attributes, and F/J choose the left or right category. Previewing the next rule is available as Assisted practice.

What task switching asks you to do

A task-switching round is not simply a reaction test with changing colors. Every trial has an explicit rule cue. The same stimulus can contain two useful attributes, but only the cued rule matters for the current response. A number may need to be classified by parity on one trial and by size on the next. A letter may need a vowel/consonant decision and then a lower/upper-case decision. A shape can be classified by geometry or by fill. The important action is selecting the correct rule before selecting the correct response.

Why repeat and switch trials are separated

If the current cue is the same as the previous cue, the trial is a Repeat. If the cue changes, it is a Switch. Mixing those trials into one average hides the part of the game that makes rule shifting interesting. DailyBrainArc therefore records repeat accuracy, switch accuracy, repeat median correct response time and switch median correct response time separately. Switch cost is simply switch median minus repeat median. A positive number means correct switch responses were slower in that block; a negative number can occur and is reported as measured rather than corrected into a preferred story.

Exact answers come from the stimulus attributes

The source bank does not contain a secret answer script that the interface blindly trusts. Each abstract trial stores two binary attributes and the cue identifies which attribute is relevant. The runtime materializes a concrete number, letter or shape that matches those attributes. The correct F/J side is then recomputed from the active rule and the block's response-side mapping. The independent verifier repeats that logic separately when checking sources and sampled Practice and Daily blocks.

Congruent and conflict trials

Some stimuli point to the same response side under both of their attributes. Those are Congruent trials. Others would produce opposite response sides depending on which rule is active; those are Conflict trials. For example, a number can be odd but belong to the high-number category. If parity maps odd to F while size maps high to J, the unused attribute creates response conflict. The trainer reports a conflict timing cost separately from switch cost so the two effects are not silently combined.

Easy, Standard and Challenge change real conditions

Easy uses 24 trials, one stimulus family and two rules, with a lower switch count and a generous response deadline. Standard uses 32 trials and raises the switch density while shortening the deadline. Challenge uses 40 trials across two stimulus families and four possible rules, so a switch can change both the decision rule and the kind of stimulus being interpreted. The committed source generator enforces frozen switch ranges rather than assigning a vague difficulty label after the fact.

Balanced blocks matter

A poor rule-switching block can become predictable. Too many left responses in a row encourage button rhythm instead of cue reading; too few switch trials fail to exercise switching; an extreme congruent/conflict mix changes the interference demand. The project generator therefore checks response-side balance, congruent/conflict balance, switch-count ranges and maximum same-response runs before accepting a source. Every committed difficulty contains 30 independently generated sources.

Why median response time is used

One accidental pause can distort an arithmetic mean. Median correct response time is more stable for short browser blocks, so the specialist uses it for overall, repeat, switch, congruent and conflict timing. Wrong answers and timeouts do not get treated as fast correct trials. Accuracy remains the first result to read. A tiny switch cost with many errors is not presented as superior to a slower but accurate block.

Clean and Assisted practice

The cue for the current trial is always visible because the task is about applying a changing rule, not guessing which rule exists. During a running block you can also preview the next rule. That advance information reduces the surprise of a switch, so using it marks the entire run Assisted. Assisted results remain in recent history for learning, but they do not replace the Clean best for that difficulty. Clean means the next rule was not revealed in advance.

What the response map means

F is the left response and J is the right response. Each active rule has a fixed category mapping for the block. The mapping can be flipped deterministically when a new seeded block is materialized, which prevents one permanent key association from becoming the whole task. The current mapping is shown clearly, and the full active map is visible before and during play so the challenge remains rule selection rather than hidden instructions.

Deterministic Practice instead of random unreplayable rounds

Opening Practice without a seed inserts a stable seed into the URL. That seed selects a frozen source, concrete stimulus tokens and response-side orientation. Reloading the same URL reconstructs the same block. A Fresh block creates a different seed. This makes bug reports and personal replays meaningful while keeping all generation local to the browser and committed project data.

Independent verification and provenance

The V0.138 bank contains 90 project-generated sources split 30/30/30 across Easy, Standard and Challenge. No commercial assessment item bank, scraped training pack or remote API is used. The verifier checks source structure, rule coverage, switch ranges, response balance and conflict balance, then materializes 6,000 Practice blocks and every day of the frozen 2026 Daily schedule. It independently recomputes correct sides rather than trusting runtime answer metadata.

How this differs from Stroop

Stroop asks you to suppress an irrelevant dimension, such as word meaning while responding to ink color. Task Switching can also contain conflicting attributes, but the defining event is that the relevant rule itself changes across trials. A conflict trial can occur during either a repeat or a switch. That allows the trainer to report switch cost and conflict cost as separate task metrics instead of treating all interference as the same phenomenon.

How this differs from Reaction Time and Dual N-Back

Reaction Time measures response latency to one event under one simple rule. Dual N-Back requires comparing the current stimulus with items several steps earlier. Task Switching instead keeps the required information local to the current cue and stimulus while repeatedly changing which decision mapping is relevant. It therefore fills an executive-control product gap rather than duplicating the platform's speed or working-memory specialists.

How to practice without chasing a meaningless low time

Start by protecting accuracy. Read the cue first, then classify the relevant attribute, then press F or J. Once accuracy is stable, compare repeat and switch medians across Clean runs on the same device and difficulty. If switch accuracy drops sharply, speed is not yet the useful target. If accuracy is high but switch responses remain slower, repeat the same difficulty before shortening the response deadline through a harder mode.

Interpreting switch cost carefully

Switch cost is a within-block arithmetic difference, not a diagnosis of cognitive flexibility and not a population percentile. Browser scheduling, keyboard choice, familiarity with the response maps and fatigue can all change the measurement. The most useful comparison is your own Clean history under similar conditions. The specialist deliberately avoids translating the result into IQ, age, medical status or occupational suitability.
