Word Ladder Game Online

Turn one five-letter word into another by changing exactly one letter per move. Every rung must be a valid word, and every bundled puzzle has a par verified against the full 8,636-word validation graph.

How the ladder works

The goal is visible from the start. The challenge is finding a clean chain of real words between both ends.

One substitution

Each rung changes exactly one letter and keeps the other four letters in the same positions. Reordering letters or changing multiple positions is rejected immediately.

Par is solver-verified

Easy sources have a shortest path of 3 moves, Standard 4, and Hard 5–7. QA independently searches the complete validation graph so a hidden shorter path cannot make the displayed par false.

Recover after a detour

You are free to leave the bundled source route. Hint runs a new shortest-path search from your current rung and reveals only the next letter change, not the whole answer chain.

Unlimited Practice without random junk

The source bank uses common five-letter endpoints from the existing curated Word answer pool, then keeps only routes whose globally shortest path can be expressed through the project's common-word layer.

The game still accepts any valid five-letter rung from the same 8,636-word validation dictionary used by Five-Letter Word. That means you are not forced to follow the stored route: if you find another legal shortest chain, it counts.

Undo and Reset let you explore without reloading. Your local specialist record tracks solves, par solves, streak and a difficulty PB based on extra moves first and time second. Hints reduce the platform score so an assisted route is not presented as identical to an unaided par solve.

Everything runs in the browser with no account or paid API. Word Ladder is a Practice specialist, so it does not change the established Today's 6 lineup or the historical Daily Five-Letter Word contract.

How to improve without memorizing a route

A strong ladder player thinks about useful neighborhoods of words rather than trying to guess the bundled answer chain.

When you are stuck, compare the current word with the target and ask which positions already match. A direct change is useful only when the resulting five-letter word is real, so sometimes the best move deliberately changes a letter that looked finished. That temporary detour can open a dense cluster of neighboring words and create a shorter way back toward the target.

Par gives you a concrete benchmark without pretending that there is only one acceptable solution. A par solve means your route used the same number of moves as the independently verified shortest distance in the full graph. Finishing one or two moves over par is still a valid solve, and it can be more useful for learning because you can inspect where your route wandered. Unlimited Practice is the better mode for experimenting with these alternatives; Daily is better when you want one stable puzzle to compare with your own previous play.

The game intentionally keeps assistance transparent. A Hint reveals one next letter change from your current rung rather than silently solving the rest of the ladder, and the saved result records that help. Show route is a full reveal and records a give-up rather than a win. That distinction keeps local streaks and par records meaningful without turning the puzzle into a high-stakes assessment.
