World Capitals Quiz

Practice country–capital recall across the full 195-country study core. The engine can ask country → capital, capital → country, or mix both directions so you do not learn only one side of the association.

How the capital drill works

A world round is useful when you want the widest possible interference: nearby-looking flags and familiar capital names appear beside less frequently practiced countries, so recognition cannot rely on a single continent.

The Geography engine now draws this challenge from the same 195-country core used by the world-map game instead of the older partial 100-pair bank. For this World page, the active pool contains 195 countries. Wrong choices are drawn from the same region first when possible, which makes elimination less obvious than using random capitals from anywhere in the world.

Recognition is not the same as recall

Choice questions are useful for learning associations, but seeing four possible capitals can supply cues that disappear when you have to produce the answer yourself. The typed Recall activity removes those choices. In Country → capital mode you type the capital from the country prompt; Capital → country reverses the association; Mixed alternates both directions deterministically within the round.

Typed answers are normalized for case, accents and ordinary punctuation, and the verified country/fact bank carries explicit aliases where a valid answer has more than one accepted form. Reveal is available when you are stuck, but a revealed prompt is treated as a miss and enters the same local capital-review ladder as a wrong choice. That makes Study Atlas → typed recall → missed-item review a concrete learning loop rather than three disconnected pages.

Why mixed direction matters

Recognizing that Ottawa belongs to Canada is not exactly the same retrieval task as producing Ottawa when Canada is the prompt. Mixed mode alternates both directions in the same round. You can also switch the control to Country → capital or Capital → country when you want to isolate one direction.

A few countries do not fit a simplistic one-city story. The bank keeps role-aware wording for cases such as administrative, constitutional or legislative capitals rather than pretending every political system uses the same convention. That keeps the quiz useful without hiding real-world nuance.

Use the full pool without changing Today's 6

This is unlimited Practice. Scores stay separate from the six-game daily total, so repeating a long capitals round does not inflate or overwrite today’s score. A fresh Practice seed changes the selected order and distractors on replay.

Suggested study loop

Start with Mastery 10 if the region is unfamiliar. Move to the full pool once you are consistently recognizing most answers, then switch direction and replay. For the world set, Deep 30 is a practical bridge between a ten-question sample and a 195-question marathon.

What full coverage means here

The country count on this page is not a marketing estimate. It comes from the same configured country inventory used by the Geography engine. A full-pool round samples every configured country in this study region once for the session, while shorter rounds select a seeded subset. That distinction matters when you want to know whether you have actually practiced the whole pool instead of simply replaying another ten-question sample.

Choose a region before the full world

The same Recall engine can narrow the active pool to Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Oceania or the combined Americas. That is useful when a 195-country session creates too much interference to diagnose what you actually know. A regional Mastery 10 lets you retrieve a smaller set, while Full region covers every configured country in that region without pretending the region sizes are equal.

Once a region feels stable, switch to Mixed rather than only making the round longer. A learner who can type Paris from France may still hesitate when Paris is the prompt and France must be produced. Reversing the association exposes that asymmetry directly. The round summary keeps the result local and separate from Today's 6, so repeated study does not alter the daily six-game score.

Accepted names are explicit, not fuzzy guesses

Typed practice should not mark a valid answer wrong just because the display label contains an accent or because a country has a common committed alias. The local answer checker normalizes case, accents and ordinary punctuation, then compares against the canonical answer and aliases stored with the country/fact record. Examples include forms such as UK for United Kingdom and accent-insensitive capital entry where the underlying answer contains diacritics.

This is still strict recall rather than approximate spelling. The checker does not use a remote language model or arbitrary fuzzy matching to decide that a different city is “close enough.” If an alternate form is accepted, it comes from the committed data contract. That makes a replay reproducible and lets the independent verifier test the same acceptance rules used by the browser.

Turn misses into a review queue

A wrong typed answer and a deliberate Reveal both count as a missed retrieval for that prompt. At the end of the round those events flow into the existing Geography capital-review ladder on this device. Correct review answers lengthen the next interval according to the same visible local review system used elsewhere in Geography.

A practical loop is therefore: browse uncertain countries in Study Atlas, run a typed regional Recall, finish the round even when some prompts require Reveal, then revisit the resulting capital review items. This is more informative than repeatedly restarting until you happen to receive an easy random subset, and it keeps the study history tied to the facts that actually caused difficulty.

Keep going

Switching between location, capital and flag recall uses different retrieval cues for the same geography knowledge. Related challenges below stay inside the real tested game engine rather than sending you to a static answer sheet.
